Winter is lifting, and maybe the recession is lifting a little too. Duncan is drying out after a welcome lashing by El Niño. The cottonwoods are readying themselves to pop into leaf. Farmers and backyard gardeners are digging mild turnips from the soil and snipping up the first tender broccoli florets. As of this writing, the snowpack in the Gila Wilderness, whence our river descends, is more than 180% of normal. So we are also bracing for a flood! You can track our river conditions at http://waterdata.usgs.gov/nwis/uv?09439000.
And here are some upcoming events you may not want to miss (river permitting)
-
Duncan’s new website lists most of the items below on the “Community Calendar” page, and tells you much more about our little town. See www.duncanarizona.net.
-
The Greenlee County races are coming right up. Two consecutive weekends this month, and a dance at The Riverfront both Saturday nights.
-
And that same weekend, on both the 24th and 25th, the Shakespeare Ghost Town just 38 miles away in Lordsburg, New Mexico, will be presenting some of their exciting historical re-enactments. Forget Tombstone—this is the real thing. More at shakespeareghostown.com/act.html.
